    This bridge may actually have been in good repair.  

    An oversized truck, which was there illegally, seems to have torn through its structural supports.  

    Lots of bridges get knocked down that way, even ones which were perfectly safe.  

    So it's possible that better regulation of truckers is the real issue.

      Bridgehunter.com lists the overhead clearance as 15 feet, 4 inches.  Given the number of overheight vehicles on the road, it was an accident that was inevitable.

      Even an overheight detection system or a cable system a few inches lower than the overhead clearance short of the bridge would likely have prevented the accident.
