renewable energy? We still need to put an end to poverty worldwide, and all of the ills that go with it.

is Richard Heinberg, Mokurai.  Then check out CASSE.  Also, if you want to go back in history, even Adam Smith and John Stuart Mill recognized that infinite economic growth was impossible on a finite resource base.

While it is undoubtedly true that the undeveloped parts of the world are in need of some economic growth to raise their living standards and that this should happen, there is not enough of the planet to go around for the majority of them to ever reach US living standards.  And while we definitely should grow the sectors of the global economy which generate and store renewable energy, there is no way in the foreseeable future that RESs will replace the cheap high-energy-density fossil fuels that have enabled and powered the last 150 years of economic growth that our socioeconomic and financial systems are currently based on.

The laws of physics dictate that a global steady-economy is inevitable on a finite planet with limited non-renewable resources.  The sooner we acknowledge this certainty the less painful the transition will be.
