      There was a lyric sheet.

      The hard part was making the least bit of sense of it.  The Wikipedia article gives some clues; the framing device of Smile is a trip across the US, from New England to Hawaii. But I don't think it's a real trip.  It's rather meta, more about creating images, as in theater and music, about such a trip.  Surf's Up is about something like falling asleep on stage where a set is being built.  Colonnaded ruins are the fake pillars on the set.  One falls, and they fall fall like dominoes.  But the underlying quality is more elegiacal, not comic.
