    were a subset of orgies?

    I loved Euripides when I was in college and I'm reminded of his Bacchae which seems to describe one of these rituals.

    The play is an easy read(and a bodice ripper) but I remember their being a ton of drinking, sex and at the end, intentionally or not, some sort of brawl would break out.

    My memory is hazy but I think it was a Satyr play, describing a series of Bacchanals(which are still celebrated today in Mardi Gras and other festivals) done to honor Bacchus who was a lesser god of wine and partying and, I think, related to Dionysus, the proper god of wine.

    How that came to be part of celebrations in places like Brazil and New Orleans today is beyond me...
