    I think I know much of it, but the second vertical letter seems wrong....

      switched on the second row.

      The cover illustration of the novel is rather sexist...but it was three quarters of a century ago...

        I'll fix it in a moment. (Luckily it's a slow night, so you may be the only one who's been exposed to the incorrect clues.)

        As for the cover, the paperback edition I bought was a later one -- probably from the late 60s or so -- with a very non-racy cover. (But a lot of paperback covers s in the 40s and 50s -- especially for murder mysteries -- had rather racy covers. This is probably a good case for don't judge a book by its cover.)

        I had to change all three clues, though.

        (Too bad -- I was fond of that row. Perhaps I'll use it some other time when the vertical letters actually are in that order.)
