anymore. But you read every day about the (US-supported Salifist) Sunnis in Syria calling Shiites "nonbelievers". To the best of my knowledge, even at the worst of times, Protestants and Catholics have never called each other "nonbelievers": each just said that the other was very wrong about some very important theological matters.

So I think it's to confuse matters to declare Islam and Christianity to be equally broken religious belief systems, which you seem to do. Clearly, Islam is much more broken. What we know as secularism is a byproduct of Protestantism. Meanwhile, the only only major Muslim country that has claimed to be secular—Turkey—has a prime minister who wants to ban alcohol for religious reasons. So whereas (Western) secularism is a product of a branch of Christianity (Protestantism), it is not at all clear whether Islam is compatible with secularism.

are not nearly so deadly toward each other now, sure ... but they were previously just as ruthless as Muslims now. England has their own "Bloody Mary," Queen Mary I, who received her name specifically for mass killings of Protestants. Similar things happened with Lutherans in Germany too.

I do agree that many predominantly Muslim countries are what must Western countries consider uncivilized. I'm a gay man, and I'd be hanged in the street. Heck, the idea that any person can be hanged in the street is a prime example of barbarism in my book.

The Michigan court basically ruled in favor of creating a "blasphemy free" zone in Dearborn, MI. A man was trying to have a non-violent protest of religion in an American city, and since the religion protested was Islam, it's somehow different. So to think we in America are somehow shielded by the Atlantic ocean from the attacks on European culture are wrong.

The hundred years war? The Huguenot massacres? The crusades?

This is nonsense. Christians kill each other (Serb/Croat): or kill a common perceived other (Bosnians)

I'm an atheist, but the idea that Islam is particularly bloodthirsty is an orientalist delusion, belied by the conquistadores, the slave trade, and the colonisation of Africa and Asia
