  •  I had a similar experience recently (22+ / 0-)

I try to clean up the neighborhood near where I live, especially the lake out behind us. Recently, I got permission to clean up an old park that's been closed down and locked for eight years. It's a lot of work, but the feeling of being close to nature and putting things right is wonderful.

I was walking down by our lake the other day, and saw a big piece of trash lying on the grass. When I got closer, I saw that it was a dead fish, starting to dry out in the sun. Closer still, and I saw that the "dead" fish was still trying to breathe. It was a catfish, lying there looking terrified. Trust me - it really did look scared.

I carefully put it back in the lake, staying away from the mouth area, where the barbs are.

It didn't move for a moment, and I thought perhaps it was too late. It swam just a little bit, and then lifted its mouth to the surface of the water. Trying to get rid of trapped air? No idea.

After watching it for a while, I went on with my work. When I came back later, it was gone... so either it swam away, or something got it, because if it had died I imagine it would have been floating at the surface.

I don't know if it's still alive or not, but I'd do the same thing again in a heartbeat. Life matters. And this is one of the reasons I do what I do out there.
