    ... racism, born of many things but the one you do not mention is the impulse to cruelty, which is always easier to direct against the black man than the white man.
    Cruelty, and how the slave-owner mitigated his natural (human) empathy aroused from enslaving another man, and how it was then necessary to "docilize" the "beast," was the genesis of the diary, and the reason for including the gentleman's quote to that effect.  It was not "mentioned," but indeed is the key to the message of entire quote.
