    kills me both because you are living it but also because it has become so common.

    I have a diary in the works on this, but I'll share the basic info with in case it might help...

    I don't know where you live but you might look to see if the area has a Time Bank. These are institutions that provide a way for people to trade services. Unlike Barter, the service you provide to one person gives you a credit you can use to acquire a service from any other person in the network. It won't replace a good paycheck or benefits, but it will allow you to leverage the skills you have in exchange for some of the things your family can use. And there's no applicable income tax.

    In lieu of that you might look to start one or pursue similar exchanges informally through Craigslist. And then there are Barter networks in some places.
