    and I've noticed more and more of it since Bush II. And it's getting worse because the media makes a lot of money by conflating the two; being veteran friendly makes their bottom line look better.

      I agree. This diarist helps us to remember what Memorial Day was, and should be. When I was a boy, this was a day not only to honor those lost in war but all the dead. People would go to the cemetery to clean up family graves and place a plant or some flowers. As with so much in American culture in recent years, this day too has been cheapened and twisted to serve commercial and militarist values.
