  •  You handled that with tremendous grace. (26+ / 0-)

I have tons of awkward encounters, most of them self inflicted.  But this is one that comes to mind.

My husband had an accident that mangled his hand, removed part of it and required extensive surgery to preserve what was left.  (For the record,he's fine now  and there's almost nothing he still can't do.)

Because the accident was work-related, we researched workers comp laws enough to demand the best medical care we could get.  Which involved one of the country's top specialists in hand reconstruction.

So we were in the office and his head nurse was doing the pre-interview interview, when it came out that I was in chemotherapy.  The conversation moved on, and in short order the doctor came in.  As he examined my husband's hand and suggested ways to proceed, I said something like "You must get tremendous satisfaction out of your work."

"Oh, yes," he said.  "I can't imagine doing anything like.  Like being an oncologists, when all your patients do is die."

The nurse's head swiveled around, her eyes wide with horror.  I just looked at her and smiled, and didn't say anything.

I know she laid him out after we left.
