    If you look at the mishap rates for the first generation jet airliners compared to today we're much safer.

    We have a lot of technology they didn't have even 30 years ago that gives us much better situational awareness.

    We have equipment that shows us where other aircraft are (TCAS) and where the terrain is (EGPWS).

    Today's jet engines are tremendously more reliable than what the early 707s and DC-8s had. An engine failure is an extremely rare event today.

    The main cause of accidents today is human factors, which is why so much emphasis is being put on training and crew resource management.

    If the pilot's good, see, I mean if he's reeeally sharp, he can barrel that baby in so low... oh you oughta see it sometime. It's a sight. A big plane like a '52... varrrooom! Its jet exhaust... frying chickens in the barnyard!

      Those are good things to know. I haven't been able to afford to ride an airplane since 2008.

      I sure do miss it....
