  •  I never got to finish college (4+ / 0-)

because I got married and started a family. Just as well, because I couldn't afford more than a couple of classes a semester anyway, and borrowed books. Hub got his degree with scholarship and work-study, then went back after the Navy to get a different degree via GI Bill. He has never actually worked in either profession, does a little work on the side setting up and managing websites. I've done quite a lot of tutoring through college level courses for the youngers, and coached three through nuke school (extremely gnarly) and HP/C technical certification (Argonne).

I went into graphic arts/publishing and journalism for day-jobs. Fields where talent, technical ability and experience have always counted more than letters after your name. Knowing a bit about physics, biology, optics and geology has often come in handy, and I've been known to take courses here and there in colleges where we've lived if they sound fun. Audited a lecture course back in the mid-70s I was admitted to only because I was current in crystallography. The course was labeled "Genetics," though not that much was known at the time beyond DNA structure and coding. I took it because Isaac Asimov was the lecturer... §;o)

I'd like to see people get some credit for alternative learning experiences and employment. I learned WAY more in the course of my career than I ever did in college.
