  •  We were a two breadwinner family because (7+ / 0-)

at least one of us was ill and in fact died when the kids were preteens. Leaving the other one able to complete their raising into an MPA, and the other running a small government agency. My mother had to do that as well when my father died the day after my tenth birthday. Both of my grandmothers had to make do as well, one when her sea captain husband was at sea, and the other when her husband simply abandoned her, and she had to make her own homestead, and did.

Did that make all of us wicked single moms, because we were not willing to roll over and die and take the kids with us?

And how about all those unmarried single moms the father of whose children was unwilling to assume any responsibility for said kids? That's not a new thing either. My  nephew recently married a wonderful woman, whose father had to be persuaded not to bring his third wife to the wedding, since both no. 1, the mother of the bride, and no 2 the one who raised the bride from infancy, were also going to be there.
