    And am about 3/4 of the way through "Consider Phlebas." Naturally I didn't see your suggestion to start with "The Player of Games," but at any rate I'd still have begun at the beginning.

    To be honest it was slow going at first and yet other similar series start off slowly as well. The trick is to become familiar with the characters not by having them formally introduced but by observing their interactions with each other, with their surroundings, with the culture (small "c") which they inhabit, the technology that underpins it, and with themselves. It is a matter of getting used to things. Once you have that down then things begin to make sense.

    I was aware that Banks would likely pass away very soon...sad to hear that this has now happens. I look forward to reading what is now his legacy to its conclusion. Thanks for getting this diary up at a time when I could actually read it. It is singularly informative.
