In order to collect unemployment benefits, one must have lost a job due to no fault of his or her own.  That means that the person collecting the benefits was employed and wanted to work, but lost his or her job due to cutbacks or other reasons, but was not fired for reason.  Many on the right equate unemployment benefits with welfare in which the recipient is some lazy bum who does not want to work and would rather sit back and collect free money.

The benefits themselves are meager in most states and require that the recipient be actively seeking a job while collecting the benefit. This is not welfare, but is an insurance program intended to help stabilize the economy during times of high unemployment.

The whole idea of peering into the bank accounts of recipients makes no sense in that the amount of money in one's bank account when one becomes suddenly unemployed is irrelevant unless one equates unemployment with welfare.

The stripping out of the working and middle class in this country is an abomination. They won't be satisfied until the United States is reduced to a permanent third world status and that is rapidly happening before our very eyes. The irony here is that I believe Wisconsin was the first state to enact unemployment insurance.

    •  I was raised that unemployment benefits is not (10+ / 0-)

welfare but something the employee earns and can use if laid off from a job.  There was a time no one was shamed for collecting those earned benefits when out of work.  But gradually over the years, the conservative nutbags decided to start bashing those on unemployment as being equivalent to those collecting welfare. We all know those are 2 different things.  Of course, it is bad enough they bash people on welfare but not they have extended that to those on unemployment , those on workmens comp, and those on disability.

The right wing now even bashes people who are working if they are state employees or teachers.

The right wing seems to bash anyone who is not wealthy or anyone who does not own a small business.
