In all likelihood, they will also be looking for deposits other than unemployment compensation to determine if you're working for cash while collecting benefits.

So the poor unemployed person who sells something to raise some extra cash or gets a cash gift/loan from someone might be denied benefits.

So all they know is how much they've put on the card, and how much has been spent by the person through that card. It doesn't go through anybody's separate bank account, so having access to those bank accounts would be both pointless and a gross abuse of power.

Other states need to use this system, I think.

There are definitely people (I hear them talking on the bus in the morning) working under the table while collecting unemployment. But they never put the cash into a bank account, and most don't even have a bank account. Cash in, cash out, nothing goes on their taxes.

So this scheme won't catch the real fraudsters.

UI office rummage through our stuff once a week to make sure we aren't receiving any "illegitimate" bennies.
