  •  nope the most dangerous situation (17+ / 0-)

For cops is driving their car. As it is for every one. The majority of police fatalities occur due to auto collisions not because of getting shot or injured otherwise by a suspect. If you get rid of the auto danger then it's about as dangerous as being a garbage man.

encounters with the public, but driving, particularly in urban areas, is more dangerous. There might be an argument that the police kill plenty of people while driving too.

Where I live, a couple years ago, a motorist had broken down at night on a well-lighted multilane street in a lane of traffic. His emergency flashers were on. He called AAA for a wrecker and was waiting for them.  The weather was clear and dry.

A police car, dashcam on, hit him from behind and killed him.  The officer was reading his police computer output in the car and not looking at the long straight empty street as he drove.  The officer was not injured, being protected by airbag and seat belt.

There have been many other times when police chases led to innocent people being killed in collisions.  Responsible departments have limited chases to only violent offenders and only when authorized by supervisors. The killing of innocents has gotten to be that high.
