  •  There is a great line (3+ / 0-)

in the novel The Armageddon Rag by George R. R. Martin (yes, same guy).  Set in mid-1980s America.

Our protagonist, a writer and sometime journalist, is visiting a commune where his old friend from college is living.  When they sit down to dinner, the cook proudly tells him that all the food was prepared with "no preservatives and no chemicals."

He says (I'm paraphrasing, as I can't remember the exact dialogue): "No chemicals?  Really?  No chemicals at all?"

    "None at all."

"Wow.  I should write this up.  Food made from pure energy.  This could solve world hunger!"
