  •  Not just presidential election (6+ / 0-)

Imagine a Texas with a fair redistricting in 2020 (not to mention OH, WI, FL, MI, PA, NC and VA)  The US House of Representatives will not be run by the GOP for a loooong time.

The GOP got the upper hand in 2010 because it was an off year election.  In 2020 it will be a presidential year.  If the Dems hold the presidency in 2016 with say Hillary and she wins in 2020 in relatively easy fashion where these states all overwhelmingly vote for her there will be hopefully significant coattails that will trail all the way down the ticket in these Dem leaning states.  Come 2021 when the lines are redrawn we'll see many of the ridiculous gerrymanders of 2010 undone and there will be a shift of 20-25 seats not including Texas.  If Texas is fairly redrawn then the shift will be even more pronounced and will probably be in the 40 range (20 or so seats flipping total in all the gerrymandered states).

Bottom line, the GOP bought themselves some extra time and they know it.  Their benefactors know it too which is why they're raiding the coffers on the way out.  They know they have 10 years tops before an new progressive era sweeps across this country.

Another thing to consider which hasn't been considered much is effect of immigration reform.  If lets say in 10 years or so 11 million people are all of a sudden becoming citizens and voting it will only exacerbate the demo problem the GOP has.  The GOP knows this which is why they won't allow it to happen any time soon.  But it will happen and it will spell more doom for them.
