  •  Today is Mirac Kandili (7+ / 0-)

One of the five holy nights in Islam.  The Taksim protestors were keen to ensure all that Kandil would be respected and that all were welcome to join and celebrate in Taksim.  People were handing out kandil simit, a bread baked in celebration of the holiday (delicious).  An anti-capitalist Islamic group was there and amassed a big crowd.  Some covered women with signs amassed a big crowd as well, almost treated like celebrities.  It's clear that the people in Taksim want the country (those watching on TV) to know that the Gezi Park movement and Islam are only divided by those making political use of the division.  Which makes sense, considering the vast majority of Turks, secular or not, identify as Muslim.
