  •  You know what's really (7+ / 0-)

been creeping me out? I mean, besides LivesInAShoe's perspective on adoption. It's efforts to do away with legal birth control, a proposition that would have been unthinkable only a couple of decades ago.

We can't look at this separately from the profit motive, and the need for a breeding class.

    •  Whoa, you just blew my mind. (6+ / 0-)

A breeding class.  That's it.  You've nailed the concept in one phrase!  With surrogate pregnancies there are too many legal risks, but if you've got a host of fetuses to choose from and birth mothers who are willing to put them up for adoption...

And once again, A Handmaid's Tale seems to have been far too predictive of a particular path for American culture.

There are those - including voluntary newborn placements that are both ethical and appropriate.  But they don't begin with guilt-tripping or trickery.

If you think you're too small to be effective, you've never been in the dark with a mosquito.

In many cases, adoption does seem to work out well for all involved. But it's too often exploitative.
