    In Eastern Idaho.

It was a sunset time for Idaho Dems, which included at that time Congressman Richard Stallings and Governor Cecil Andrus. Indeed, Frank Church was also an Idaho Democrat.

Something was happening even then in Idaho culture that was causing a dramatic lurch to the right. I'm not sure what it was.

In retrospect, I think that Idahoans were particularly vulnerable to the toxic cocktail of racism and anti-worker sentiment that came out of the Reagan years.

    I'm not sure it's a permanent condition.

In recent years, Boise has been "Pacific Northwest-ized." It's no longer a the lonely and isolated outpost of the interior West that it was when I lived in the state.

There have been some very fine Democratic candidates who worked hard in the past 2-3 elections, but they just can't get elected. It's dispiriting, for sure.

I think the time is ripening for Democrats, but we really need a lot of party building here. Boise has a strong liberal enclave, and about 30% of each election is reliably Democrat, but what's most needed are good liberals and moderates running in all the counties with tiny populations to make a real start at party rebuilding.

Right many are called, and damn few are chosen.
