Thin Thread was supposed to solve much of that data problem by analyzing and minimizing data as it's collected.  According to Binney and his colleagues who Mayer talked to, amazingly it worked and was infinitely scalable!

All the raw data that's scooped up gets dumped into cold storage in Utah for follow-up if needed.

Did you sell al-Hazmi that blue Toyota?  Or was that al-Midhar - I sometimes get the names crossed.  Same problem probably afflicts the analysts who have to do this for living.  G-d help them trying to keep their facts straight.

      •  P.S. - There's a better way to target terrorists. (0+ / 0-)

Concentrate on the ones who enter with CIA visas.

There's an ever better way to avoid terrorist attacks.  Don't allow so many of them into the US, even the ones the CIA considers to be its own terrorists: e.g., the WTC '93 bombers, the 9/11 attack cell; the numerous and sundry al-Qaeda operatives attracted by Anwar al-Awlaki, and the Tsarnaev brothers.

We really have to more closely control the CIA's own operatives, because these account for 90% of all the fatal mass casualty terrorist attacks in the US during the last several decades.
