  •  Thanks, MB, for this solid profile of Rep. Dingell (2+ / 0-)

who is, as I said above, my U.S. Rep.

I've been pretty lucky in my reps, really; before I lived in Dingell's district, I lived in John Conyers' district.

Dingell's lock-step support of the auto manufacturers, whatever they wanted, was undoubtedly short-sighted. But generally he's been a solidly reliable rep, taking many good positions in other areas (in particular, related to social safety net programs).

However, ten years ago he defeated Lynn Rivers, a much newer rep, in the wake of the last redistricting. Lynn is a smart cookie herself, and had a lot of promise as a legislator (which is probably why redistricting happened as it did, to pit them against each other). Interestingly enough, Dingell's campaign manager in that season was none other than Lon Johnson, who is the new Chair of the Michigan Democratic Party.

As for his longevity in office--yes, I think in  many ways it would be a good idea to see him retire, though it would be hard to relinquish his seniority and his expertise.

But I am strongly opposed to seeing his wife, Debbie, run for his seat, which seems to be in the wind. That kind of dynasty we really don't need; father and son is more than enough.
