  •  Concur, brilliant diary (21+ / 0-)

And I think that kind of writing is just another piece of evidence of a real upsurge in climate activism and awareness recently on dKos and to a lesser extent out in the rest of the world.

It will never be too late to make a difference.  Might not be the difference or result we wished for, but there will be good to accomplish in climate awareness for a long, long time.

    •  Tell me how this helps (7+ / 0-)

because I think I am missing something.

Do efforts that dampen protest on one core issue, essentially a guilt trip, help us with solidarity on other core issues?

A surveillance state hurts all activism on all core issues.  The same forces that make it difficult to make progress on climate change are the same ones who want surveillance and a measure (increasing measure) of control over the populace, making it, as they mask all erosion of basic rights, with the War on Terror.

What will the effect of this diary be?  Will it cause people who were standing up to this sit back down again?  Will it make them pass up an opportunity to seize the moment offered to us by a whistleblower who offered the proof that was not possible to get before because of extreme secrecy?  Seriously, how does this help anyone?

      •  It's been a surveillance state for (5+ / 0-)

decades and we're still blogging, working, driving, buying more shit that needs electricity to run.  Those databases will be sitting there doing nothing once the human race is extinct.  Maybe avoiding extinction is the top priority?

350.0rg held major demonstrations in DC over President's Day w/e (while the president was golfing w/ oil execs).  Over past 6 months, KXL and other climate-related diaries have probably gotten about as much attention here as civil liberties diaries.   There are plenty of us who take both issues seriously.

As to "the surveillance state for decades," what we've seen in this country since 9/11 has been unprecedented.  The opacity, the executive overreach, the wars of choice, and all the rest are fundamentally incompatible w/ a representative system of govt.

Some men see things as they are and ask why. I dream of things that never were and ask why not?

slick operation going, the CIA started revolutions all over the world for decades, Ronnie Reagan and Friends brought us AQ and the Taliban.  The databases are larger because we choose easier technology routinely, but the sifting of info is overwhelmingly more difficult.  See Boston Marathon bombers.  Honestly I think my Internet browsing history being in the hands of multiple corporate entities causes more reason to fear loss of privacy.  Those folks cost me higher auto premiums and fewer job possibilities.  That's some real life shit that trumps my fears of black helicopters ferrying me to Gitmo because I think Republicans suck.
