  •  I had an entirely different take. (13+ / 0-)

    My first thought was:

Imagine if instead of building drones and war toys and vast spying networks that may rival The Manhattan Project, government was concentrating all this wealth and blood and energy on global warming.

Huge (para-)military expenditures on a War on Terror / War on Drugs?

Our country's leadership could be putting its shoulder behind a Global War on Fossil Fuel Usage / Global War on GHG (Greenhouse Gas) Emissions.

The Dutch kids' chorus Kinderen voor Kinderen wishes all the world's children freedom from hunger, ignorance, and war.

The core issues are the same with this surveillance state and climate change.

It's sad when things that wake people up are treated like this, effectively saying 'you shouldn't be angry about this, be angry about this instead'.

When people wake up for a moment, you have to seize that moment.  Make progress on one core issue and you make progress on another core issue in both tangible and intangible ways.  One of the ways is that protecting basic rights makes it more likely that you will even be able to protest and inform on other core issues without fear.  A fearful populace will be harder to organize for causes.

The other reason to raise awareness on this particular subject of mass surveillance is that it wakes people up to the fact that you can't believe what your government is telling you, which will make people question things, and hopefully will make them turn to each other and create solidarity, which helps with all core issues.

the point that it doesn't mean that we can't do more than one thing at a time, but I do wish we got more upset at things affecting our very planet.

either. In fact, not just human life is being affected by climate change. The effects of ocean acidification are horrifying and global. IMO, there's much more to be outraged about concerning climate change, and by far more people, than any domestic program or law.

And I think many people here would agree, but it's hard to channel that outrage into positive action when the fossil fuel industry and its contacts contractors in Congress are united against taking corrective action.

      helping insurance companies. Big money.

      Fossil fuels.  Big money.

Climate change efforts.  Not big money, only helps people.  Poo on that.
