  •  driving the wrong car, driving with long hair (7+ / 0-)

I'm white but have been stopped more than once in different circumstances... three examples... once with short hair working for a delivery company... Maryland plates, as a recent hire driving one of their worst cars... no company markings.. delivery in Virginia... driving slowly in an unfamiliar area to locate delivery address... naturally followed by a police car and pulled over as suspicious...

Once pulled over with long hair in Maryland in the early 70s (driving my own car... a '61 Falcon)... not high or drunk, in daylight hours and yet they were still looking on the other side of the car for contraband that I must have thrown out the window... and just cited me for driving through a red light which I did not.... and the two reasons they pulled me over appeared to me to be old car and long hair... and potential drugs...

And in California in the early 80s... driving a VERY old ramshackle van... I happened to drive by an apartment building where police were busting some members of a Latino gang apparently... and me just driving by with long hair and a beard in that van was enough to get a cop pull out and turn on his lights and siren... as soon as I got out of the van (geez never do that NOW!) he saw that I was not who he thought I was we exchanged a few words and that was it... and all I could think was what if I happened to be a Mexican American or other Hispanic heritage person who was totally unrelated to the gang and the bust... I would not have been sent on my way immediately... I could have very well been taken into custody... just in case and taken a good few hours at least to clear things up.

We used to joke probable cause was 4 Asian kids in a car. Only it ain't funny when they get stopped by the cops. Which still happens all the time.

      I must be dreaming...

In rural Rhode Island in the mid 80's, my brother and I, of Polish and Irish extraction, always  being pulled over on the way to and from school.  Why?  Well being the 80's my brother fancied himself a musician and wanted to be in a "hair band" So, he had long hair, always wore a rock T-shirt and torn jeans.   According to our local PD, he was riff raff.

He and his friends always stopped and questioned.  And we are so white that we are practically translucent.

Not racism, of course, but classism, but still made him feel really bad, and he was and is a good kid/guy, hardworking, polite, he just looked like a roadie for Def Leppard.
