  •  RI GOP: last breath of Rockefeller Republicans? (1+ / 0-)

I've been trying to find out which Republican state party seems to be the most liberal/moderate. So far RI GOP looks like the best pick.

Lincoln Chafee managed to won the R primary in 2006 despite having a strong conservative challenger and being the most liberal Republican in the senate at the time.

Brendan Doherty, the more moderate candidate won the GOP primary for RI-01 over his more conservative challenger in 2012

The entire GOP senate caucus (all 5 of them) voted in favor of marriage equality. One third of the GOP House caucus (2 out of 6) voted in favor marriage equality, the highest support percentage wise of a GOP caucus in a lower house legislature.

The break down I have for the GOP marriage equality in the state house is as follows:

    Noes: Costa, Giarrusso, Trillo
    Ayes: Morgan, Newberry (minority leader)
    Abt: Chippendale

“Herbert Hoover once ran on the slogan, “Two cars in every garage”. Apparently, the Republican candidate this year is running on the slogan, “Two families in every garage”.” ~Harry Truman 1948

    •  FWIW Chippendale is against gay marriage (1+ / 0-)

he voted against it the first time (although for all I know he would have changed his vote - doubt it though).

as for RI-01 2012, I think a big reason why Doherty won the primary was because his opponent was a joke. I can't even remember who it was, so clearly it was no one legitimate. perhaps it was perennial candidate (and certified nutjob) Chris Young?

      •  Doherty didn't have a primary challenger (1+ / 0-)

in the end, though someone may have dropped out. Chris Young was running in the Democratic primary, along with Anthony Gemma.

        •  ah, ok (0+ / 0-)

can never keep track of Chris Young. I think he's run as a Republican before, and his equally crazy wife Kara ran against John Loughlin in the 2010 primary.
