    •  Then you've not only betted against yourself, (14+ / 0-)

but you've already lost the bet.

The very fact that the country is having a conversation about programs that were hidden, unnamed, & unconfirmed by government agencies a week ago, is itself already a good outcome.

They are no longer unnamed. Their existence is now confirmed. Many people who otherwise would prefer to turn a blind eye or to deny these activities, now have to decide if this is the type of future they want to be locked in to.

      •  Gooserock is unfortunately probably (12+ / 0-)

        right on the money here.

When Bush's warrantless wiretapping was revealed by the Ny Times after they sat on the story for a year - people got all pissed off and Congress promptly passed laws giving the Executive Branch more power to spy on Americans and exonerating all of the companies who participated.

The way that people like Obama and Feinstein are talking - and the Washington Press Corps is talking - it sounds to me like we are very likely to get at least one bipartisan bill out of this term in Congress that will further expand Executive Branch power to do this kind of dragnet spying on Americans.

I wish I felt more optimistic, but I just do not see the people who are currently in power doing anything but upping the ante here.

I don't like that any better than anybody else.

The greatest voice is the voice of the people-speaking out-in prose, or painting or poetry or music; speaking out-in homes and halls, streets and farms, courts and cafes-let that voice speak and the stillness you hear will be the gratitude of mankind.

No one gets out alive, Mr Robert

As long as the discussion is about Verizon and PRISM and Snowden most of what is actually being done or is in the works is still sliding by unnoticed.

A few things got "leaked", and what was leaked confirmed, well, what everyone pretty much already knew.  And even here the Fascists are screaming (see many comments above) "it's legal" and "it's a good thing" and "trust them" and "he's a traitor" . . . while they are busily erecting a new "security fence" around the real scope of the real "security state" apparatus to keep you from finding out more about it.
