    I've heard and read predate used in the form before. It might not be a common usage, but it is an acceptable usage.

      no sense to argue that you're technically correct in your usage and therefore retaining it.  Use the word that makes sense to all of us, rather than letting your (and I'm not referring to you personally with this, of course) ego rule, and refusing to make a change that will make sense to everyone.

      Without knowing frequency, it is difficult to tell whether the OED is noting that the word has merely appeared at least once in print.  Other standard dictionaries--such as the Random House--do not give the alternate defintiion, which indicates that it is non-standard.
