  •  My wife has studied English for 15 years (5+ / 0-)

Currently is studying to get her GED.

Unsure what else the Taliban want.

We followed all the rules, paid our fees and waited nervously for approval. We have jumped through all the hoops and now they think her 'patriotism' should be enhanced?

How? She stimulates the economy, works 2 jobs, bought a car..... She even - occasionally - has a Chik Fil A milk shake.

Her English is still quite spotty but better than some around here who have no excuse. She does have trouble with colloquialisms: She was confused recently, telling me somebody she was dealing with wanted her to put cash on a barrel. She thought this was a trick.

Another time I told her I got selected for jury duty. She became angry at me. In Viet Nam there is no jury trial and she thought I had gotten into trouble for helping somebody. "You are always trying to help people!".

So she learned about civics and the patriotic duty of Jury Duty, something our wingnut friends probably try to avoid at all costs....

    •  Colloquialism can be hard even for native English (0+ / 0-)

speakers. My cousin from Jamaica once asked a nice old lady at the post office is he had a "rubber" on her. In British English a rubber is the proper term for an eraser. The look on the lady's face was priceless ( I had to step in an explain) at which point laughs abounded.

-1.63/ -1.49 "Speaking truth to power" (with snark of course)!
