From the Abbie Hoffman Memorial Picnic, held shortly after his death at Washington Crossing State Park near New Hope, PA:

I guess TPTB expected trouble because there were dozens of state patrolmen, many paddy wagons, and even police on horseback. Also present were many bikers from Rolling Thunder.

I still don't have any idea what the authorities expected--Maybe they thought there's be a rumble between the hippies and yippies and the bikers, but the event was entirely peaceful and there was no cause for intervention that I could see. Eulogies, music, and poetry ruled the day. Picnics, and children playing on the lawn.

I should absolutely clarify that there was no attempt to smear all bikers in such a way. I should have added bicyclists, because I've had them pedal up to me as well. Point being that you can get closer to a protester on a motor- or bi-cycle than you would in a car and make a cleaner escape after your "pronouncements" to them.

Some of the most peaceful people I know are bikers. I never miss Bike Week or Biketoberfest down in Daytona Beach, either :)
