...on the diarist's statement that "the rest of the developed world uses some variation of single payer insurance".  The diarist is not correct in this regard.

While the American left seems heavily focused on single payer, the reality is that other countries have found a variety of paths to achieve universal coverage, and single payer is just one of those paths.  I think we tend to focus on it because single payer is in place and working in the country closest to us, Canada.  But the mandated insurance approach of Obamacare has also been successfully used elsewhere (including Germany, I believe).

gov't equalizes all these sickness funds -- the regulation is so heavy that it's de facto 'single payer' with the veil of choice...

You are talking about regulation and about price setting. How are you going to make that fly here?

It is very much not the same. It is "universal health care" which is what we will have with the mandate.

The link that the diarist posts says that.

    •  For-profit financing is the difference. (2+ / 0-)

      Not public/private.

We spend over $8k/capita/year with 50 million uninsured and tens of millions under-insured and are approaching 20% GDP spent on healthcare.

The rest of the western industrialized world covers their entire population for about half that, with better outcomes.
Even if private insurers are involved, it is non profit financing.

It is mathematically impossible for for-profit financing to compete for savings against non-profit financing, and we're already paying the per capita costs for universal health care, (and a damn amazing system given the $8k) we just ain't getting it.

      •  It is NOT the financing that is (0+ / 0-)

the main reason for out of control costs. the doctors and hospitals and all the other people and paraphernalia that costs so much.

It is all the unnecessary care and all the care needed to try to fix the sloppy care that people get as well as the high prices for "stuff."

Medicare is a single payer system and it is Medicare patients that are costing $8000+ a year.

Also because we have a single-payer system in place: Medicare.

because we already have a functioning single-payer system in place -- Medicare. It works so well that the opponents of government management of the healthcare system are often driven by a fear of what will happen to them if the government takes over Medicare. It's simple, it's sensible, and everybody already understands how it works.

To put the torture behind us is, inevitably, to put it in front of us.

it is not on the whole top notch care. One in 3 Medicare patients encounters a serious medical error when they are hospitalized.

And NO, everybody doesn't understand how it works.
