  •  Probably most jarring of all - to me at least (17+ / 0-)

Is Brooks' assertion that Snowden "appears to be a product of one of the more unfortunate trends of the age: the atomization of society." This from a man whose ideological cohort has spent 30 years or more working ultra-hard to convince one segment of economically-disadvantaged society that its mortal enemy is another segment of the economically disadvantaged.

The late Granny D recounted a story of meeting a garbage truck worker in Alabama, a man who made about $16,000 a year (adjusted for inflation, let's generously say the present day equivalent of $18,000 a year). She asked him what his biggest concern was, and he told her it was the estate tax. Why did he think that? Because David Brooks and his pals told him that was the nation's biggest concern.

Society has been pulverized, atomized, and fragmented by Brooks and his fellow oligarchs to set the Poors on each other. But when someone in Brooks' own club points it out, he reacts with all the priggishness you'd expect from the overclass.
