Maybe because nobody ever was really a Dad for me, all I ever wanted out of life was the chance to be a good Dad for somebody. A certain Kossack (who recc'd this diary but didn't comment, yet) and I had been married 14 years before we adopted our first daughter, now a beautiful African-American woman approaching her 30's. The chance to adopt our second daughter, the pasty one, came along 5 years later. Ebony and ivory. Before movie stars made it cool.

Knowing these complicated and beautiful creatures is worth every penny of the six figure debt incurred to put them through top-notch, out of state public universities. We pay that for them.

The younger, who lives thousands of miles away, now, texted the fabulous news today that her companion of many years has been accepted at his stretch school for an upper division transfer. The elder is 4.0 in her Masters program and is currently working on her thesis as well as a teaching certificate. It's all good.

I wish you as interesting a journey with yours as we had with ours.

And it warms my heart to see your children doing so well.  Too much of our "counseling" was about how adopted children are...different...difficult.  All I could think was "they are children."
