    are embedded in almost every site you visit.  Many place cookies in your hard drive.  They do this to collect demographic information for commercial reasons (ad placement).

    Take a look at http://blog.privacychoice.org/ (and other info on their site).  WSJ also did a great series on data tracking and internet privacy a while back, but I don't have that link handy.
