    "Loyalist" Here's my take:

    The "loyalists" need to come out in a super strong fashion towards extended primaries designed to push the Democratic party left.

    In return, the "progressives" need to agree to throw their weight behind the winner of the Democratic party primary, provided of course that he/she is better than the Republican (which right now, and frankly for the forseeable future is pretty much a given); and turn their guns only and soley on the Republican party.

    In other words, once the candidates are locked in:No bashing of the Democratic candidate or party.  No negativity towards the Democratic candidate or party.  None of this "Oh, it doesn't matter because the parties are the same" utter nonsense.

    A few election cycles of this, and the party should shift noticeably left.

    "The future of man is not one billion of us fighting over limited resources on a soon-to-be dead planet. . .I won't go back into the cave for anyone."
