  •  I wouldn't say volunteered so much as resigned. (11+ / 0-)

There is no real alternative to it other than living "off the grid" - so I would put it more as "submitted" for lack of a better option.

That doesn't make your point any less valid and I agree with everything you say - the conversation must begin. I do fear that it is too late. Corps are too used to having all that commercial info, banks to used to knowing everything, future employers. . . They won't give it up willingly. It is going to be a huge fight but one way to assure loss is to never fight.

Blessed are the peacemakers, the poor, the meek and the sick: The "party of Jesus" wouldn't invite him to their convention - fearing his "platform."

    •  There's a South Park episode about that (14+ / 0-)

I agree that this information we give up is moe mandated that is "volunteered".  It is mostly required and voluntary really in name only.

There is a wonderful (and somewhat controversial) South Park episode about those terms of service "agreement" we have to sign when purchasing corporate services.  In this episode, Kyle admits he doesn't read the entire Apple "terms of service" contract before signing it, and then finds out the hard way that the contract has some horrible conditions in it.

Some of these terms of service agreements are huge: reading the entire thing could take days.  Often, the language is incomprehensible, even for those highly educated.  And of course the terms and conditions are highly unfavorable to the consumer.

Why should we expect anything different.  The laws regarding these kinds of agreements are written by the government.  And the government and the corporations are largely one and the same now.

Every time we upgrade software (think of iTunes!) we are presented with the terms and service agreement.  It may be the same as last month when I updated, but it may have changed as well.  Who really reads them time and time again looking for changes?

        Great points HJB.

law on these agreements? Wasn't there a recent change in which credit card companies have to simplify the agreement to a one page read?  Can't the public put pressure on changing all agreements to one page?

All it takes is a nationwide 1 day NO WORK PROTEST to make congress jump at our demands.
