  •  I don't wonder; I know why (6+ / 0-)

the NRA works to water down existing laws, and to frustrate and underfund law enforcement. For some examples...

In the case of the 1986 FOPA law, a former ATF agent described how a gun dealer's false record keeping was reduced to a misdemeanor, so that it would not qualify as a federal offense, and so discourage federal prosecutors from pursuing cases in court.
As I note in today's diary, I wouldn't mind if federal prosecutors took on these cases. But I am not wondering why they don't. Underfunding, budget cuts, vacancies on courts, everything imaginable being done to cripple the Justice department and then lo and behold, gun enthusiasts question why it doesn't work and why bother with new laws. It all works quite nicely as long as one overlooks the damage the gun lobby does to the justice system in the first place.

But then, if they didn't do that to begin with, then people might think the justice system worked and laws worked and then who needs guns?

If we cannot make our communities safer with the Congress we have now, we will use every means available to make sure we have a different Congress. – Gabrielle Giffords
