  •  Have you heard William Binney? (11+ / 0-)

Illustrative of the way this issue is cutting across traditional lines, Binney has appeared in the last few days on Democracy Now, Lou Dobbs and Hannity.

He's identified as a NSA whistleblower who complained about the NSA's approach to data gathering back at the turn of the millennium.  He sometimes appears with his partner, another former NSA guy, Kirk Wiebe.

They argue that this broad collection of data is counterproductive and blame it not just for Boston but for 9/11.  They remind me a bit of Richard Clarke: crusty old MIC guys who were disgusted when their agency screwed up.

Their appearance on Hannity was really remarkable.  I believe Hannity has been calling for hanging Snowden as a traitor, but he asked these two guys what they thought.  They answered that they had gone through channels to try and set things straight.  First, they went to Congress and were blown off.  Then they went to the IG who issued a report that was so redacted that it was unreadable.  They both said that Snowden had no choice but to do what he did if he was going to let the public know what was going on.

So all you people whining that Snowden is a "traitor" need to get a new schtick.

        And on Hannity!

These two guys do have a business and a product they're trying to sell, but that's wasn't the case back in 2000 when they were trying to get someone to pay attention to what was wrong at NSA.  They seem quite credible and deal a serious blow to the "Snowden is a traitor" types.

Like I said, they remind me of Richard Clarke.

on Hannity! I'll never click on a FOX link, so I haven't seen it, but I'll bet he had to prop up his chin manually for the rest of the show, eh? ;)

What Binney was saying was so diametrically opposed to what Dobbs had been pitching that it took the old guy a while to catch up.

This issue is slicing through the old alignments like a chain saw through balsa wood.
