  •  Sadly most americans won't... (6+ / 0-)

Most americans support the idea that citizens should be allowed to own guns.  What they don't support is criminals having guns.

That is in general.  They tell pollsters that all the time.  Questions about repealing the 2nd amendment normally get around 60 to 70% that would not support that.  Even among non-gun owners.

this is the problem.  The two sides have done a great job of making it an either or situation.  Neither side is talking TO the other, but rather talking PAST each other.

Very few lawmakers have done a good job of understanding what the gun owner thinks/feels before putting out a proposed law that is supported by the more extreme gun control side.

An example is the idea of a $50 fee per year per gun that is registered with the state.  It is just $50.  What is the problem?  The problem is few gun owners own just one gun.  Most gun owners are lower middle class to low income. (Less than $40 k a year).  My brother is an assistant to a equine dentist, makes about $35,000 a year after expenses.  He has three hand guns, five rifles, four shotguns.  His wife has a pistol and two rifles.  His son has a rifle and shotgun (in my brothers name as he is not 18 yet).  So that home would have to come up with $750 a year. On top of the $96 per person hunting license they already pay.

That would mean to them no christmas or birthday presents.

They see any fee or tax as taking money from their family.  Which is why they fight these ideas.  It hurts them directly.

With the understanding of the motivations of gun owners, things like a 1% sales tax would be a start.  Increasing the fee for licenses by 1% which is directed to gun law enforcement or gun safety programs would be praised by gun owners.

Stupid question hour starts now and ends in five minutes.
