    all of the lobbying that predetermines the texts of these bills before they're even introduced into the subcommittees.

    I look back with nostalgia on the shock that I felt on the day that I first heard that private lobbyists essentially wrote legislation for the legislators. Why would I be nostalgic about that? Because the shock and outrage I felt then was infinitely preferable to the jaded cynicism that I fear I've slipped into as that kind of thing has became normative.
