  •  I have some familiarity (7+ / 0-)

with data mining used in market research. If can some very general notions about possible correlations, but nobody in their right mind would sink much money in a business venture without a lot more specific corroborating information.

The real issue with the intelligence programs is risks vs benefits. The risks are real and apparent, the benefits not so much.

    •  The Benefits are that they don't have to go ASK (1+ / 0-)

someone at Google or Verizon or AT&T to get them the records they are looking for, they already have them. That way they can find out what they want to know without having to let on what they're really looking at, or, heaven forbid, ask a judge if they're allowed to. They just go open the "file" themselves. They want to know what they want to know right now. Why? MYOB. That's for them to know and us to ask about. The benefits seem awfully clear, if you're them, not us.

Meanwhile, I remember the Masters of Deception. Seems like it wouldn't actually take that much even today for some kind of 'accident' to take the whole thing down.*

*dear NSA: I don't know how to hack and that comment was pure speculation. what I really think is: kids don't try this at home.

      •  The benefits are for blackmailing Congressmen (1+ / 0-)

And spying on political dissidents.  Members of the Green Party or the Libertarian Party, perhaps.

I agree with you.  The fact that they don't have to actually get a warrant or go to a judge is a benefit... if they're trying to do something really shady and illegal, like digging up dirt to blackmail a Congressman.  Or a President.
