    That this is being exposed now does not mean it is new. Most of the documentation I have seen puts the full version of this surveillance regime as operational in 2006-2007. The fact that the telecoms were asked to participate in this in February, 2001 (when Qwest refused, and their CEO suddenly had legal troubles) and it predates 9/11, should receive more scrutiny.
    The roots of this intrusion have nothing to do with terrorism.

      These authoritarian freaks already had their plans laid and 9-11 gave them the convenient pretext to implement those plans. Waving the 9-11 bloody shirt any time anyone raised objections was enough to squelch debate until those plans had become a fait accompli and it was too late to reverse their implementation short of anything other than a violent revolution.
