of American companies has been the prime mission of the CIA since the fall of Russia. I wouldn't be surprised if they had an explicit doctrine in this respect.

If debt were a moral issue then, lacking morals, corporations could never be in debt.

the complicating factor in this era is global corporations that really have tangential fealty to any given nation.

In the old days, Exxon was a "US" company with interests that were aligned and the economic picture was such that the US was THE market in the world.

In this era, however, China is the fastest growing economy.  If I were in charge of growth and making money for any company, I'd be hard pressed to pledge allegiance to the US flag when the US economy and the citizen's buying power is on the decline - I'd be going for the Chinese and other emerging markets.  I am not saying that I am "that" person who would destroy her own country for the sake of profit, but if I were purely market and profit driven, I would have no other choice than to focus my attention on the emerging market in China and India.

Anyway, the business angles on this issue are many and aplenty.
