  •  Do they fire employees who are in a (0+ / 0-)

heterosexual extramarital relationship?  Do they fire employees who use birth control?

    •  Here in very Catholic New Orleans, (0+ / 0-)

yes they do fire teachers in Catholic schools who live openly in heterosexual relationships without being married.  I know a couple of teachers who keep their living relationships secret from their schools for that reason.

As for birth control, they typically don't ask.  They don't ask about your living relationships, either, but will terminate you if you make it public -- like discuss it in front of your students, talk about it openly, or put it in the paper (like an obituary of a relative that mentions you and your live-in partner).  I think they treat birth control the same way -- as long as it's private and not open, they don't inquire. But if you started talking with students in a Catholic school about your use of birth control, you'd be gone.

If you keep your "anti-Catholic" activities private and not open, they don't ask, but if you are open about your "anti-Catholic" activities, they generally won't let you keep a job teaching kids in Catholic schools.

"Catlicks" know this well. Keep it to yourself, and, if you get into trouble, a bottle of wine or two (three, if they are Jesuits) will get your priest to consider your side.

      •  I am guessing... (0+ / 0-)

...being publicly anti-Catholic would be a simple a mentioning that you have a niece or nephew that is gay?  What about saying your son or daughter had a same-sex marriage in a state where same-sex marriage is legal and you were happy they finally got married?

I get the whole idea about faith is you got to buy the whole thing (hence why I left Papists a while ago), but in New Orleans it does seem a bit silly with all the editing and subterfuge.

        •  I probably wasn't clear (0+ / 0-)

I wasn't talking about the New Orleans public school system, which is as neutral -- as religion goes -- as any public school system.

Instead, I was talking about the Catholic school system, which is ubiquitous.  Essentially, the Catholic school system here is what much of the middle class -- Catholic or not, and regardless of race -- relies on.  Its a private school system, but it's generally affordable for much of the middle class.

What I was discussing are the requirements to teach in a Catholic school.  They generally require that the teachers generally follow Catholic teachings.  So no, having a nephew who is openly gay would not generally disqualify someone.  However, if the teacher himself or herself openly lived with a partner outside of marriage -- homosexual or heterosexual -- that is the teacher openly and publicly contradicting Catholic teaching, and that would justify (under most teaching contracts for Catholic schools) justify dismissal.

      •  that;s the part that really burns me up (0+ / 0-)

they encourage lying.  don;t tell them you're divorced and you can still get communion.  don;t tell them you are in a same sex relationship and you can keep your job.  Jesus had a lot of negative things to say about letter of the law hypocrites.  Jesus' words about gay people and same sex relationshpis and marriage equality--ZERO
