  •  "Extramarital affair"? Really? (2+ / 0-)

That's not just stupid--it's dishonest.  You can't have an extramarital affair if you're not married, and such an affair would require a third person somewhere.  The Church is perfectly cognizant of all o this;  they've been parsing morality for a couple millennia now.  I don't see how anybody couldn't see through this.

    •  Well, the people I know who work as (0+ / 0-)

teachers as Catholic schools here in New Orleans know they can be fired if they live with a partner outside of marriage.  I know heterosexual teachers who keep the fact that they live with a partner secret from their employer because they know that's contrary to the "Catholic values and morals" provisions of the contracts they signed in order to get the teaching job.

Catholics view any sexual relationship outside of a Catholic marriage as sinful.  Catholic school teachers typically sign contracts stating that they will not openly live in such relationships because that hurts their ability to be "Catholic role models" for their students.

that does not surprise me at all.  But my point is that two people living together conjugally without being married are not having an extramarital affair.  Perhaps Hale did sign such a contract, and as such, is in violation of it, though as a lesbian in Ohio, it's not like she had much of a choice in the matter.  The Church needs to come clean on precisely why Hale was fired, because it sure as hell wasn't because she was having an extramarital affair!

narrowly than they do.  They read "extramarital" as "outside of marriage."  It does not necessarily mean adulterous (when one participant is married to someone else).  "Extramarital" can be any sexual activity when the participants are not married to each other, even if neither is married to someone else.
