    I wasn't talking about the New Orleans public school system, which is as neutral -- as religion goes -- as any public school system.

    Instead, I was talking about the Catholic school system, which is ubiquitous.  Essentially, the Catholic school system here is what much of the middle class -- Catholic or not, and regardless of race -- relies on.  Its a private school system, but it's generally affordable for much of the middle class.  

    What I was discussing are the requirements to teach in a Catholic school.  They generally require that the teachers generally follow Catholic teachings.  So no, having a nephew who is openly gay would not generally disqualify someone.  However, if the teacher himself or herself openly lived with a partner outside of marriage -- homosexual or heterosexual -- that is the teacher openly and publicly contradicting Catholic teaching, and that would justify (under most teaching contracts for Catholic schools) justify dismissal.
