  •  I have long been a stern critic of pop singers' (13+ / 0-)

renditions of the national anthem. Call me a curmudgeon, but I find the over-stylization and excessive vocal ornamentation of the national anthem to be highly disrespectful as it calls attention to the singer, and not to the civic ritual being performed. (I am also a stern critic of the national anthem itself: the reason why we always see it sung by soloists and poorly at that is because it is a difficult tune to sing and nearly impossible for an assembly to sing together due to its broad range: choosing a key which will please both high and low voices is very difficult. It's a shame we're stuck with this unsingable mess of a tune and a poem about the War of 1812, which we lost--ask a Canadian.)

This young mariachi delivered a clear, straightforward rendition with excellent diction, decent intonation (he should have started a half step lower) and a minimum of ornamentation. He also seemed to be genuinely enjoying himself and genuinely proud of his country. It is the best rendition of the national anthem I have heard anywhere in years.

I happen to love real mariachi. I had a buddy back in Boston who lead his family's mariachi orchestra. They are actually rather famous, and I've seen them perform. Amazingly talented. Mariachis are story tellers--and also part of the story in Texas, too. Frankly, I cannot think of anything more distinctly "American" than this young man dressed as a charro and singing a patriotic song.

The animus directed towards this young man's performance is rank racism at its most transparent. I knew that racism can make a person blind and dumb, but I didn't know it could also make you deaf.

I resent that. I demand snark, and overly so -- Markos Moulitsas.
